AHA Links Page

This list was prepared in response to the many requests I have had for information. In addition to The Hyperlexia Handbook, Reading Too Soon, Hannah's Hope, and Hyperlexia Therapy That Works, I found these books and sites to be of great use to me. I have also listed sites for language and occupational therapy materials/information. This listing is by no means comprehensive and will grow as I read more and I receive suggestions from you (hint :-) )! I hope that you will find it of use.

Books
Site/Title & Author(s)Description
Future Horizons Great resource for autism publications. Since there is not much out on hyperlexia, it can be useful to read information on autistic spectrum disorders to get ideas.
Behavioral Intervention for Young Children with Autism ed. Catherine Maurice (Carried by Future Horizons). This book is loaded with excellent ideas and materials for assessing what your child does and does not know. I strongly suggest giving it a look. The chapter on data collection is outstanding.
Late Talking Children and The Einstein Syndrome by Thomas Sowell These are two interesting books that look at the issues of late-talking children from a different perspective.
Late Talking Preschool Children Who May Be Diagnosed as PDD by Jill Smith and Howard Diller This short book presents interesting information on teaching techniques for some late-talking children.
Pretending to be Normal by Liane Holliday Willey This is an entertaining, fascinating, positive, and extremely useful book. This book enabled me to see a person with Asperger's syndrome perceives the world. It is loaded with useful information and insights that will be useful to parents as they begin to discover their children. Ms. Willey is also an outstanding speaker.
Thinking in Pictures by Dr. Temple Grandin (Carried by Future Horizons). This is a marvelous book that gives us insight into how the visual mind works. Dr. Grandin is legendary in autism circles and has helped revolutionize our understanding of how the minds of some people with autistic spectrum disorder work. While all of the information presented may not be relevant to hyperlexic individuals this book is worth reading. Many of her writings are also on the web. She is a fascinating speaker, too.
